The Women's Association of Mineral Resources organized its first national conference in 2018 in Erdenet with the support of the Erdenet Mining Corporation, which was a major event for women in the sector to unite their voices. After that (May 3, 2019), the second conference was held in Ulaanbaatar under the motto “Collaborative Development Gateway”. Then third national conference will be held online in Ulaanbaatar under the theme “Women Leading Responsible Mining” (March 16, 2021).
In 2017, the Ministry of Mining and Heavy Industry conducted an impact assessment of the mineral resources sector in order to create an environment for labor relations, change gender stereotypes through the development of cooperation and partnership in all areas, ensure gender equality, and implement gender legislation, reform the policy and legal environment of the geology, mining, oil and heavy industry sectors with a gender concept, reduce the negative impact on the environment, human rights, society and the sphere of influence, share the benefits of the sector equally for women and men, and be family-friendly. Based on this assessment, the “Gender Policy in Geology, Mining, Petroleum and Heavy Industry (2019-2026)” and its implementation plan were developed and approved.
Currently, 15% of employees in the mineral resources sector are women, and in some companies, 25% of all employees are women. This highlights the need for mineral sector to focus on raising awareness of human rights and gender, and increasing women's participation and representation in decision-making.
